"Dog Tales" for soprano, flute, clarinet, and piano |

Dog Tales -
for soprano, flute, clarinet, & piano
Dog Tales was commissioned by the Cincinnati new music ensemble Conundrum (soprano, flute, clarinet, piano) and was premiered by them in November 2009. They are all avid dog lovers and wanted a piece that told the stories about their various dogs.
In setting out to write this work, the members of Conundrum provided me with stories, pictures, and anecdotes about their four-legged friends. I then passed these wonderful collections onto my poet/writer friend Bobbi Jo Nicotera who then created the amazing text that I set for this piece. What I think is remarkable about the text is that Bobbi Jo not only captures these dogs in prose, but also creates a text that speaks to a more universal theme of relationships and our interaction with the world around us. Often sweet and funny, these touching pieces are a testament to the love for man’s best friend and how these relationships truly affect us each day.
Movements: I. We Live to Run II. Thirteen Ways of Looking at Mona - Part I III. Dig IV. Thirteen Ways of Looking at Mona - Part II V. This is a Good Place VI. Ode to a Golden Retriever

Four Japanese Songs for Mezzo-Soprano and piano |

These four short pieces were written for Malesha Jessie to sing on her vocal master's recital at the University of Southern California in April 2005. The four poems/haiku, although short, give us great imagery with very few words. In creating these pieces, I wanted each piece to reflect this compact yet effective idea of the strong imagery presented. Listen to examples and read the poetry: |

Enchanted Rock (Spring, 2001) - text by Bobbi J. Nicotera
The poetry for Enchanted Rock deals with a visit to this great granite
dome just outside of Fredericksburg, Texas as well as the history that
surrounds the area and Texas. Enchanted Rock is a large,
bald-faced dome of a rock that people flock to climb for the panoramic
view of the country that surrounds it. Upon reaching the top one
can see for miles into Texas, and really marvel and what those first
settlers must have encountered when reaching this vast and
extraordinary land. The poem speaks of Indians, spirits, and a
lone Texas Ranger. The rock even speaks of its greatness over
mere mortals. The poem also talks about the present day, of
visiting the rock among other tourists and taking in the land and the
creatures that make up this mosaic of picturesque country.
The text for Enchanted Rock came to my husband, Simon, and I as a
wedding present from our good friend, Bobbi Jo Nicotera. She and
our other friend, Tim, took his collage of pictures from our trip to
Enchanted Rock and made a framed gift out of text and
photographs. The experience of visiting Enchanted Rock as well as
the wonderfully descriptive poem of the place has made a delightful
text to set to music, and will surely bring the magic of this rock and
place to listeners who have never visited this enchanted rock.
